- 1989 The Birkenstock boom
- Birkenstock sandals boom all over the world. The demand for closed-toe shoes with original Birkenstock footbed increases.
- 1990 Prototypes of closed-toe Birkenstocks
- First prototypes of closed-toe shoes are produced – in two widths and with a replaceable footbed made of natural materials.
- 1991 The first collection
- First test shoes fulfill the quality demands and the production is being started. The result is a collection of three closed-toe models in seven leather and color variants each.
- 1992 Market introduction
- First shoes are dispatched and presented at the largest American shoe exhibition at Las Vegas at the same time. It‘s a great success: Manufacturing capacity rises above 200,000 pairs per year.
- 1993 Change to CFC-free manufacturing
- Birkenstock is the first sole manufacturer worldwide which switches to 100% CFC-free manufacturing. This even improves the quality of the soles. The first catalog for consumers is printed.
- 1994 Development and innovation
- Pasadena – the still successful shoe model – is being developed and sold in more than 40 countries. A shoe for kids is also being produced – for the first time with a second footbed in the next larger size. The innovation of “shoes which can grow” wins multiple awards worldwide.
- 1995 Foundation of the FOOTPRINTS Schuh GmbH
- The FOOTPRINTS Schuh GmbH is being founded in Bad Honnef in order to separate the product line of closed-toe shoes from classic Birkenstock sandals.
- 1996 Pasadena reaches cult status
- The collection is supplemented by ten more models in trendy colors. Pasadena reaches cult status in Japan unexpectedly. Production can‘t keep up with the demand for the bestseller any longer.
- 1997–2002 Growth and nature protection
- FOOTPRINTS are worn all over the world – also by top models on the catwalks of Paris and Stockholm. The collections are supplemented by casual and trekking shoes, elegant ladies‘ shoes and boots. FOOTPRINTS becomes official partner of the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald (Society for the Protection of German Forests).
- 2003 Climber of the year
- The German shoe trade elects FOOTPRINTS as “the climber of the year”. In a nationwide survey FOOTPRINTS leads significantly in the categories: fit, product quality and customer service.
- 2004–2010 Cooperation with Til Schweiger
- Actor Til Schweiger designes unique sneakers, clogs and lace-up shoes for his own FOOTPRINTS collection.
- 2011 Quality and acting in a responsible manner
- The high quality of shoes from FOOTPRINTS is now instantly recognizable on the memorable Hang-Tag. The current catalogue is printed on FSC certified paper , which helps to preserve the forests and to promote a responsible forestry worldwide.
- 2012 Participation in the Evers Re-Forest Program
- The annual main catalog was printed on PEFC-certified paper and is 100% carbon neutral through the participation in the Evers-Forest Re-Forest program. In addition, many FOOTPRINTS models come with a second pair of laces.
